Laundry in Thailand

Preamble

Are you wondering how to get your laundry washed at a reasonable rate in Bangkok? If so, then read on…

Down and Dirty

When I first came here I thought, like other tourists, that you had to pay 60, or more, baht per kilogram of laundry at the laundry shop to get your clothes washed.

Sometimes those costs are 100 or 120 baht a kilo, depending upon your location (i.e. center of BKK, in the heart of tourist hot spots, etc.).

However, after having lived here, I realised that it is all a scam and that if you go a little way out of the city center, and into the Thai residential areas, that there are washing machines outside condominiums, and blocks of flats.

There are generally two sizes of washing machine, small and big and the costs are respectively 20 or 30 baht for a full load.

In fact, near my block of flats, there is a set of small washing machines for 15 baht. It is a bit of a walk but worth it, I think, even if everyone does call me “Key Nioaw” (tight) for skimping on the 5 baht. I don’t mind the 300 meter walk.
