Windows 7 fails to update

Preamble

I have been trying to install Windows 7 on an Acer Aspire 4410. A simple enough task, one might think, and indeed it is one that I have performed many times before. However, this time, it is proving impossible to get beyond the Service Pack 1 update.

Issues encountered

updates

Windows 7 fails to update after installing:

  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (KB976932), and;
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile for Windows 7 x86 (KB982670)

At this point, it will just constantly check for updates, but not actually find any updates. Sometimes I see an error code, but usually it just appears to be in an actively hung state, with the green progress bar:

  • 0x8007000E – Seems to relate to language packs. I am installing in Thailand, so not sure if that has anything to do with it. I have tried OEM and Acer versions.

I also suffered a blue screen crash upon the restart after installing Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile for Windows 7 x86 (KB982670) update, at the “configuring updates” window, which left the update in a “pending” state, which no amount of reboots and shutdowns would fix.

Upon restarting and opening Windows Updates I get the following
