More High Powered USB charging stations

Preamble

After my failed attempt to purchase one of the rare, and much sought after, Xtar Eu4 charging stations, due to the fact that they were discontinued (see High power USB charging station), I thought I’d have a look for a reasonable facsimile.

Usually when a product is discontinued, some bright spark in China takes the design and continues to manufacture them, maybe with modifications to make them even cheaper to produce.

Requirements

  • Cost, less than $39, which was the cost of the EU4
  • Not a wall wart, these get too hot
  • A euro plug socket, the figure of eight plug used by radios. Usually the swappable mains plug designs use this cable, like original Apple iPhone chargers and MagSafe chargers
  • two or more USB sockets plus a QC3.0
  • Display optional, not really required
  • PD optional, not really required

The “clone” contenders

After a quick search on eBay for QC 3.0 multiport, I found these:

36W Quick Charger USB Charger QC3.0 Type C PD3.0 Dual Fast Charging Wall Charger, £7.19

Asometech

  • QC: 5V @ 3A, 9V @ 2A, 12V @ 1.5A
  • PD: 5V @ 3A, 9V @ 2A, 12V @ 1.5A

These seems to best the most similar to the EU4, 51W 4 Multi-Port PD Quick Fast Charge QC 3.0 USB Type C Hub Wall Charger Adapter, £9.88

Unbranded

This has PD output

2 x USB, 5V @ 2.4A (12 W + 12 W)

QC3.0, 5 V @ 3.4A, 9 V @ 2 A, 12 V @ 1.5 A (18W)

PD, 5 V @ 3.4A, 9 V @ 2 A, 12 V @ 1.5 A (18W)

Adding these power ratings = 12 + 12 +18 + 18 = 60 W, more than the 51 W specified.

Maybe the PD can not be used at the same time as the other ports, which was the case with the EU4.

No display

QC 3.0 6Port Multi-Port USB Wall Travel Charger Desktop USB Hub Charging Station, Asometech, £12.99

Brand Asometech. This has the best detailed spec, and apparently aluminium plate cooling…

40 W

5 x 8 A = 40 W

QC3.0 5V @ 3.4 A/9V @ 2A/12V @ 1.5 A = 18 W

Has a display.

4 Multi-Port Fast Quick Charge Type-C QC3.0 USB Hub Charger Station LCD Display, £12.29

Unbranded, but very similar to 30W/40W QC3.0 PD3.0 USB Charger Wall Travel Mobile Phone Adapter Charger Station, £15.58

Although it has a USB-C output, it is not PD capable (although one similar (see below) has PD.

30W rating (not much), but unclear if this is the total, or just the two USB outputs

USB Output: 5V/6A (2 x 3 A) (30 W)

Output Power: 30W

Type-C Output: 5V/3A (15 W)

QC3.0 Output: 5V/3.4A, 9V/2.3A, 12V/1.5A (18W)

Total power = 15 + 15 + 15 + 18 = 63 W

Has a display.

48W 4 Multi-Port Fast PD Quick Charge QC 3.0 USB Type C Hub Wall Charger Adapter, £11.80

48W 4 Multi-Port Fast PD Quick Charge QC 3.0 USB Type C Hub Wall Charger Adapter, £8.77

Unbranded

Both of these would appear to be the same, although the details differ slightly.

USB-C output labelled PD, but only has 5V @ 3 A (15 W) (the photos of the cheaper versions show the USB-C port label varies from USB-C to PD 18W) (the photos of the more expensive one labels the USB-C output as PD but the description states 5 V only).

2 x USB 5 V @ 2.4 A (12 + 12 W)

QC3.0 Output: 5V/3.4A, 9V/2.3A, 12V/1.5A (18W)

Total power = 12 + 12 + 18 + 15 =  42W + 15 W = 57 W

The swappable mains connectors don’t seem to be figure of eight, but rather a unusual clip.

Monsters

Universal 100W USB QC PD 3.0 Intelligent Multi 8 Ports USB Quick Charger Station, £27.99

Various cables, suggests a figure of eight (euro plug) lead.

Universal 100W USB QC 3.0 Type C PD 3.0 Fast Charger Qi Wireless Charger Station, £22.99

Wireless 10 W

PD 18W

QC3.0 18 W

Output: DC5V20A(2.4 A/Port)

4 x USB 5 V @ 2.4 A (4 x 12 W = 48 W)

Total power = 10 + 18 + 18 + 48 = 96 W (this must be a first as the power quoted is pretty accurate.)

Various cables, suggests a figure of eight (euro plug) lead.

72W 6 Ports USB Phone Quick Charger 18W QC3.0+PD3.0 Fast Charger Station Adapter, £20.99

Dual, USB/PD/QC3.0

Power = 12 + 12 + 18 + 18 + 18 + 18 = 96 W

72 W is the 4 x 18 W together

6x USB Qi Wireless Charger 70W Dual Quick Charge 3.0 QC3.0 Fast Charging Station, £15.99

USB 36 W, wireless 36 W

30W/40W QC3.0 PD3.0 USB Charger Wall Travel Mobile Phone Adapter Charger Station, £12.98/13.98 (PD option)

Power figures quoted are just fantasy. Should be 18 + 12 + 12 (+18) = 42 (60) W.

Same as the 4 Multi-Port Fast Quick Charge Type-C QC3.0 USB Hub Charger Station LCD Display, £12.29 above.

18W Type C PD 3.0 Fast Charger Quick Wall Charger Adapter Mobile Phone Charger, £9.11

PD only

40W 8 Ports USB Charger Adapter HUB Charging Station Socket Phone Fast Charger, £13.99

No QC3.0 nor PD

AUKey 5 port with QC3.0

I looked at this in my previous blog, High power USB charging station. Review : Aukey 5 port USB charging station QC3 PA-T15

Conclusions

The items photos and descriptions are all rather random, especially w.r.t. the USB-C output (is it PD or not?), apart from the Asometech, so you don’t really know what you would be getting.

The best bet seems to be the AUKey 5 port charger, one of which is QC3.0. It has a good Lygate review, Aukey 5 port USB charging station QC3 PA-T15. IN Fortune 1290 baht, on eBay AUKEY 5-Port Desktop Charging Station with Quick Charge 3.0, £17.50 + £0
