Don’t get the wrong BNO055!

Preamble

The Bosch BNO 055 IMU – a combined accelerometer, magnetometer and gyroscope with a built in ARM processor – can support both IIC communication and Serial communication, via the IIC or UART modes. However, this question on SE.Robotics, Aliexpress bought BNO055 UART connection, brought to my attention that certain breakout boards for the BNO005 can not be used in UART mode (at least not without some rework of the board) and therefore are only compatible with Arduino but not the Raspberry Pi.

APM Power Modules

Preamble

This blog leads on from the blogs Flight Controllers, see the section on APM/Additional Required Extras, (in particular Safetly Use CLONE APM Power Modules), as well as Low Voltage Warning for CC3D. There are varying reports that claim that these devices can pass the full battery voltage to the flight controller and fry it, but there are also others that say that this is scaremongering – so who is telling the truth? Also there are cheaper clones versions that lack certain components. This article explores both of these points.

Infra Red temperature sensors

Preamble

I was looking for an Infra Red thermometer to measure the heat on my solar PV panels and for checking my 3D printer. Whilst tempted by thermal imaging cameras, I was somewhat put off by the £2000-3800 price tag. So, I opted for the cheaper gun like tools. However, there are some DIY options that I will briefly look at first.

Preamble

Having trouble getting the ArduPilot/ArduCopter source code (it would be rather churlish to call it a sketch) to compile? Here is an account of the issues that I encountered when I gave it a go… Continue reading Compiling ArduCopter/ArduPilot with the Arduino IDE
