A Raspberry Pi 3B+ (not the 3B) can boot from an external USB drive or stick “out of the box”. However, It can not boot from an external USB SD card reader… why is that?

This USB to Ethernet adapter was required for my cluster (How to build a Raspberry Pi cluster). The Pi has drivers that recognise the adapter, however it doesn’t quite work out-of-the-box.
The Turing Pi 2 (kickstarter: Turing Pi 2 Cluster Computer) seems to be a bit of a miss.

If you don’t want to use one expensive SSD for just one Pi OS, it is possible to have multiple bootable partitions, although there is no fancy GRUB like UI.
Using a WD Blue 240 GB, and this JMicron based unbranded clone USB 3.0 to SATA adapter (capable of UASP),
I tried to get either my RPi4 or Pi 400 to boot from an SSD instead of the SD card.
However, this particular USB/SATA adapter does not support booting via the USB 3.0 port on the Raspberry Pi…
The official JetBot uses a 128×32 OLED using a SSD1306. However, other sizes exist, such as a 0.9″ 128×64 OLED. This can also be used, by just passing a different height argument to the SSD1306_I2C class constructor.
While it is obvious that the official PoE and PoE+ HATs can not work with the Pi 400, and that the Pi 400, while having a PoE IC on the PCB, isn’t actually PoE capable, nevertheless, there may be a (somewhat) elegant solution in the form of the Pi-Supply PoE Switch Hat…
TL;DR – Pi 400 can not work with any PoE HAT.
